Submarine TITANS has the unique distinction of being the only game in the RTS genre where the entire realm takes place fully underwater. It is also the earliest RTS to have a full-fledged spectator feature for single and multiplayer and also the only RTS of its time to have an AI which could, when so instructed, play the entire game for the player, handling combat and building on all sides. This game is also one of the very first RTS games which had fully user-editable AI scripts, including an extremely detailed manual included on the CD on how to mod your own AIs. The game lobby allows a wide range of options, such as removing unit number limitations, starting resources or starting tech level. It also comes with a fully functional map editor, which can create both multiplayer maps and scripted missions and campaigns.

DOS This requires a DOS emulator. You can get it here. War Inc. is a real-time strategy computer game developed by Optik Software. It was published by Interactive Magic on August 31, 1997. It was fairly unusual at the time in its incorporation of a rudimentary stock market, placing the player directly in control of research and development, and the ability to completely customize units by using a variety of components. War Inc. (Project Airos in Australia and Germany) received an overall rating of 66% from GameRankings from three different review sites. While it was panned as being "mediocre" for not meeting its potential by GameSpot, Game Revolution praised it for "flexibility to create a nearly unlimited variety of units".

Designed by Joe Ybarra, designer of the classic Starflight games, Alien Legacy is an excellent space strategy game with a good dose of adventure and action elements thrown in. In the tradition of Starflight, explore and build new colonies on distant planets while researching alien technologies. The cliche plot at the start soon evolves into an interesting mix of alien espionage, mysteries, and intergalactic conflicts. A solid game (although not a classic that Starflight is) that was severely underrated and underhyped, and light-years better than the its overhyped cousin Outpost DOSBox This requires the DOSBox emulator. X-Com 1 Offering strategy in a world of sci-fi / futuristic, turn-based, rpg elements, X-COM: UFO Defense is an abandonware developed by Mythos Games Ltd. and published by MicroProse Software, Inc.. Released in 1994, you wander around in a isometric, bird's-eye view perspective. The first game of the X-COM series, UFO was well received but suffers from its uneven graphics and the heavy menus. The game takes loads of hours to be enjoyed! If you are having problems running the game then check out this page. X-Com 2 A must-have for any strategy and wargame lovers, Terror from the deep is quite similar to UFO, but have more various sceneries, is more complexity and a bigger longevity. This X-COM got more plans, more guns, bewitching music and formidable AI (too much sometime). Some bad points: interception phases can be laborious sometime, the game interface is still messy and the game is not in S-VGA! Tons of time is necessary to play it, beware! X-COM: Terror from the Deep patch, fixes, maps or miscellaneous utilities. If you are having problems running the game then check out this page.

Dark Colony is an underrated real-time strategy game in the same vein as StarCraft or Warcraft 2. Its commercial failure is perhaps unsurprising, given the deluge of RTS games in 1997 and the fact that Dark Colony does not offer anything that is dramatically different from RTS bestsellers. Still, there are some innovations, however small, that are worthy of recognition, in addition to the fact that the game is a good starting choice for newcomers to this genre who are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the frantic action of StarCraft. Dark Colony is set on Mars in the far future. Humans have discovered a new, valuable energy source called Petra-7 on Mars. The bad news is that a group of wandering aliens, who call themselves Taar, feel that the humans are intruding too much into their potential new home. In Dark Colony, you can either represent the humans, or the aliens (called "Greys" by the humans) and help them establish their new home and rid the planet of those pesky humans. SSI definitely took the approach "more is better" with Dark Colony, as the game is more or less a typical RTS, except there are dozens of maps, many multiplayer options, and additional features such as nighttime missions, and the ability to fight indoors and underground. The game is quite easy to get into and enjoy, though, as Adrenaline Vault observes: "The game was easy to get into and start playing. The tutorials offered a brief but informative glimpse at the important parts of the game. The game was really set up to include lots of combat and little of anything else (i.e., resource management). The missions were fairly interesting and usually featured variations on the same theme: kill the other guy. The multiplayer portion was pretty standard. I liked some of the wars, but there are a lot of real-time strategy (RTS) games on the market that are much better suited for multiplayer play than this one. The manual was pretty sparse and had only basic information and a minimum amount of detail. Of course, unless you've never played an RTS game before, you'll pretty much be able to pick up everything without a problem." Dark Colony also introduces some new features not commonly seen in RTS, such as the ability for your units to advance in rank, similar to Fantasy General. They can also be awarded medals for exceptional performance in battles, and this will improve their abilities. The only major downside is that the units are basically the same on both human and alien sides, and there is no truly race-specific unique units that make gameplay different. As such, you may not be tempted to play as the other side once your campaign is over, although the flawless multiplayer play may change your mind. Gameplay

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is a real-time strategy video game which was released for Microsoft Windows on October 23, 2000 as the follow-up to Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Red Alert 2 picks up at the conclusion of the Allied campaign of the first game. Its expansion is Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 contains two playable factions, the Soviets and the Allies, which both previously appeared in Command & Conquer: Red Alert. The single player campaign is structured in an alternate-ending mode as opposed to a progressive story mode. Red Alert 2 was a commercial and critical success, receiving an 86% from GameRankings. After the attempted conquest of Europe depicted in Command & Conquer: Red Alert, the Soviet Union is in utter ruin. Joseph Stalin is dead, and the Soviet military has been all but destroyed. The Allies determine that a regime change would cause mass unrest in the Soviet Union, and in order to gain both support and stability in the region, the victorious Allies name Alexander Romanov, a distant relative of Tsar Nicholas II, as the puppet Soviet Premier. Romanov acquiesces to the Allies' demands at first, though he builds up the Soviet military for "defense purposes" – a cover for an intended invasion of the United States. The game's story line starts off in 1972, with the United States Armed Forces caught completely off guard by the sudden massive Soviet invasion of the United States, with Soviet aircraft, naval vessels, amphibious forces, and paratroopers coming in on both the East Coast and West Coast and with the majority of Soviet ground forces coming in through Mexico, which had recently voted in a communist government, starting World War III. The U.S. attempts to retaliate with the use of nuclear missiles, but Yuri, leader of the Soviet Psychic Corps and Premier Romanov's top advisor, uses his mind control to manipulate the personnel charged with launching the warheads and leaves them to explode in their silos. Within hours, the U.S. is overrun with Soviet Army troops. In response, the U.S. President Michael Dugan establishes an emergency response team headed by General Dan Carville and the Commander known as "The Ghost" (the player) to the Soviet army later in the game. Note You might need to follow this tutorial (on reddit) to get the game running on newer systems like Windows 10.

This impressive add-on to the fun and frantic Red Alert 2 does what other great real-time strategy expansion packs, such as The Conquerors for Age of Empires II and Brood War for Starcraft, have done before--it makes an already great game even better, not only by piling on new features, but also by adding enough significant enhancements that the result stands out as being not just broader than its predecessor, but legitimately different. That means Yuri's Revenge will more than likely renew your interest in Westwood's over-the-top game. Many of Yuri's units are very interesting. His Gatling tanks fire faster and faster upon their targets--if you can protect them long enough, they'll eventually be dishing out huge damage at a tremendous rate of fire. These flimsy units can be great for defense from within Yuri's tank bunkers--immobile fortifications that let his tanks fire on attackers without fear of retaliation. Meanwhile, the mastermind unit, a strange tanklike vehicle, can automatically mind-control any enemy unit that crosses its path--it mind-controls units automatically, but the catch is that it starts short-circuiting if it mind-controls more than three. Yuri also commands legions of Incredible Hulk-like mutants called brutes, which can go toe-to-toe with enemy tanks. He has defensive structures that automatically mind-control groups of units that enter their sphere of influence--truly an imposing obstacle. Plus, he's got a very nasty nuclear submarine in his arsenal. Altogether, Yuri's new faction is very different from those of the Soviets and the Allies--even his ore harvester, called the slave miner, is nothing like the harvesters for the other sides. It's a self-contained refinery, and slave units automatically shovel ore into this armed platform to fuel Yuri's war effort. Like the other two factions, Yuri's side has a lot of personality and largely consists of units that are well designed, memorable, and worth using in most any battle. Yuri's forces are physically weak when directly compared with those of the Allies and Soviets--but they can be used to devious effect. Note Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge is an addon for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, you will need the original game to play. Note 2 You might need to follow this tutorial (on reddit) to get the game running on newer systems like Windows 10.

Based graphically and operationally on the film, Starship Troopers takes several cues from Heinlein's book by adding (or returning, if you want to look at it that way) powered armour, long-range jump capability and the infamous micro-nukes from the book. The missions that result are a surprisingly comfortable hybrid of the film's pitched battles and the book's guerrilla/terrorist military actions. Missions featuring the film's gun-emplacement-laden forts, holding off literally hundreds of bugs while you wait for a dropship to cart you out of the danger zone go hand-in-hand with a truly innovative propaganda mission that sees you safeguarding an unscrupulous TV presenter as he films the recently evacuated inhabitants of a faming community being "safely" returned to their homes. The defining feature of squad-based RTS games is that there's no way to reinforce your team once you enter the combat zone. Okay, there's the odd mission where you get an extra squad member to babysit or a rescue mission with some healable walking wounded, but the fundamental dynamic of this game is that you have to keep your troops alive from the beginning of a mission to the end. Wounded troopers can be med-evac-ed mid-mission if you've chosen a medic as one of your support troopers (support troopers feature psychics, snipers, medics and the minelayer/armour-healer engineers), but should you run out of med-evac resources (four per medic per mission), you're pretty much obliged to return to wherever your troopers died and retrieve his dog-tags.

KKnD Xtreme can be described as the humorous cousin of C&C. While it is not all that different from Westwood's blockbuster, the fantastic humor and good unit balance makes the game much more deserving of attention than its sales figures would suggest. If you love RTS games with a campy sense of humor and don't mind graphical similarities to C&C, KKnD Xtreme is well worth your time. Highly recommended!

Atrox is astonishingly similar to Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft. The gameplay, the graphics, units, buildings, even single animations are extremely close to the original. The game is a real-time strategy game where the player controls one of three races (Hominides, Inteliom, Kreators) and tries to destroy all the others on the map. To accomplish this task, he can build a base with many different buildings such as weapon factories, barracks, power plants and so on. He also has to gather resources to build all his stuff, in this game, he needs to get Quark and some liquid crystal. The game features three different campaigns (one for each race) as well as skirmish mode, network and online play (the latter using a server).

Airline Tycoon is a managerial simulation in which the player is the manager of an airline company. This game features six missions (plus a tutorial) in which the player needs to fulfil different goals to win. Of course it offers all usual options for business games: fire and hire personnel, taking commissions (while considering the capabilities of the own fleet) or buying, repairing and upgrading airplanes. Every day has two recurring activities: receiving feedback for the past work and planning the routes for every plane. This can be a challenging task because the 48 airports along with an unlimited number of planes (18 different models) give a lot of opportunities. The player also has the option to cooperate with one of the three AI competitors. Besides the usual office and statistics screen this game also features an animated airport view in which the player receives optical feedback, e.g. potential customers which think about the stuff they like and dislike. On this screen the player has direct control over his character and moves him to the places where the above mentioned actions are performed.

The main goal of the game is to defend the most important areas of the world. A map gives an overview and shows every part of the world which is endangered - clicking on such a point starts the mission. This part of the game is in real-time which means you sometimes have to wait until something happens. These are randomly generated which includes the goals, e.g. killing all enemies, defusing bombs or evacuating humans. For every mission you choose four of your team members which have special abilities, e.g. healing or invisibility. You also choose weapons and other gear for every team member. The gameplay of the missions itself is very similar to X-COM: UFO Defensive, just in real-time. You indirectly move your team over the map, give them tactical orders, e.g. to knee, to use barrage or to pursue enemies. The game can also be paused at any time to give orders. After a mission is completed you receive experience points which can be used to improve your team member's stats. All new weapons found during the mission are automatically researched by the lab.
