About This File

OpenTTD is modelled after the original Transport Tycoon game by Chris Sawyer and enhances the game experience dramatically. Many features were inspired by TTDPatch while others are original.

Significant enhancements from the original game include:

  • bigger maps (up to 64 times in size)
  • stable multiplayer mode for up to 255 players in 15 companies, or as spectators
  • dedicated server mode and an in-game console for administration
  • IPv6 and IPv4 support for all communication of the client and server
  • in game downloading of AIs, NewGRFs, scenarios and heightmaps
  • new pathfinding algorithms that makes vehicles go where you want them to
  • autorail/-road build tool, improved terraforming
  • canals, shiplifts, aqueducts
  • larger, non-uniform stations and the ability to join them together
  • mammoth and multi-headed trains
  • different configurable models for acceleration of vehicles
  • clone, autoreplace and autoupdate vehicles
  • the possibility to build on slopes and coasts
  • advanced/conditional orders, share and copy orders
  • longer and higher bridges including several new designs, plus fully flexible tracks/roads under bridges
  • reworked airport system with many more airports/heliports (e.g. international and metropolitan)

  • support for TTDPatch NewGRF features offering many options for graphics and behaviour configuration/modification

  • zooming further out in the normal view and zooming out in the small map
  • Lots of effort has been put into making OpenTTD easy to use. These include:
  • convert rail tool (to electrified rail, monorail, and maglev)
  • drag&drop support for almost all tools (demolition, road/rail building/removing, stations, scenario editor, etc)
  • sorting of most lists based on various criteria (vehicle, station, town, industries, etc.)
  • mouse wheel support (scroll menus, zoom in/out)
  • autoscroll when the mouse is near the edge of the screen/window
  • sell whole train by dragging it to the dynamite trashcan
  • cost estimation with the 'shift' key
  • advanced options configuration window, change settings from within the game

Graphical/interface features:

  • screenshots can be in BMP, PNG or PCX format (select in game options menu)
  • more currencies (including Euro introduction in 2002)
  • extra viewports to view more parts of the game world at the same time
  • resolution and refresh rate selection for fullscreen mode
  • colourful newspaper after a certain date
  • colour coded vehicle profits
  • game speed increase (through fast forward button or by pressing the TAB key)
  • snappy and sticky windows that always stay on top and neatly align themselves to other windows
  • more hotkeys for even less mouse-clicking
  • support for 32 bit graphics
  • support for right-to-left languages
  • support for other (sized) fonts where the user interface scales based on the font and translation

      The player can choose between the Klingons, Romulans or the Federation to play as, and each race has 14 missions. Each mission has a certain amount of objectives, like mining certain resources, capture, protect or destroy certain buildings, build specific colonies at the Colony Site, which have to be completed in order to complete the mission.
      The Player's colony always starts out with only the Colony Hub as the command post and a Storage facility to store the processed minerals available, requiring the player to build/upgrade all other available buildings. But some missions give the player a slightly more developed colony to ease the job for accomplishing the missions. Buildings built later on in missions include construction yards, vehicle yards, resource processors, power generators, mining stations, science stations, security and arsenal facilities, sickbays, transporter pads, shield generators, defensive buildings such as photon turrets and static disruptors, food growing facilities, as well as living space for colonists. Military units built include APCs (Armed Personnel Carriers), phaser vehicles (Federation), disruptor battletanks (Klingons and Romulans), photon artilleries, and other specific vehicles to each specific race.

      The game plays much like Warcraft III with added features, some previously used in Battle Realms. A similar layout and control system is used, and the player gets to control hero units with special abilities. Most regular units also have abilities of their own. The game also follows certain RTS conventions such as having rally points and controlling unit creation and purchase of upgrades at designated buildings.

      Described by the developers as a modern version of Gauntlet, The Return of the King is a hack and slash action game played from a third-person perspective. The game is very similar to its predecessor in basic gameplay. Each character has a quick attack which does minimal damage and can be easily blocked, and a fierce attack, which does more damage, but is slower and leaves the player vulnerable to attack. Only fierce attacks can break enemy shields. Each character also has a ranged attack, a "killing move" (which can be used to instantly kill downed enemies), a parry (which can deflect enemy attacks), a knock back (which pushes nearby enemies away), a jump back (in which the player character jumps back away from the enemy), a devastating attack (a charged fierce attack) and a special ability. Playable characters in the console and PC versions are Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo and Sam, with Faramir, Pippin and Merry available as unlockable characters. Playable characters in the GBA version are Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Gandalf, and Éowyn, with Gollum and Sam available as unlockable characters.

      The Hobbit is primarily a platform game, with elements of hack and slash combat and some rudimentary puzzle aspects, played from a third-person perspective (the Game Boy Advance version is played from an isometric three-quarter top-down view). The player controls Bilbo Baggins throughout the game, the majority of which is built around basic platforming; Bilbo can jump, climb ropes and ladders, hang onto ledges, swing on vines etc. Progression through the game is built around "Quests." Every level features multiples quests which must be completed in order to progress to the next level.       The goal in this real-time western strategy game is to become a cattle baron that rules the prairie. Typically, you start with a small ranch that can be extended by breeding herds and trading cattle. Indians, bandits and bounty hunters will be on the look-out, so you need to hire gunslingers in the saloons to protect your property. As the ranch grows into a small community, different buildings can be constructed: houses, cowboy quarters, sheds, storehouses... After a while, you can also build your own towns with banks, hotels, churches, railroads, saloons and a sheriff's office.
      Your men need to be kept in good health, just like your cattle. Experienced characters are to be protected at all costs, as they level-up and earn veteran skills. Six different levels are available, for abilities such as shooting, attention, branding, healing, pasture and trail. Their performance is also affected by energy, courage and morale. Next to the transport of goods through dangerous areas, you can also be struck by drought and epidemics.
      If the trade business lets you down, you can train your cowboys to become bandits, and rob nearby stores and banks. If you break the law, you need to deal with the local sheriff as well, or you can bribe him. Far West can be played as a full campaign or with skirmish maps.
